Google Yourself

This article from Time says that Google wants you to Google yourself.

The idea behind it is that you can better your search results by creating a Google profile which has basic information and pictures that you can make public. I made my own profile at http://www.google.com/profiles/david.storms54 that you can check out.

I decided to do a bit of ego surfing to see what I found:

  1. Searching on “david storms”

My site doesn’t come up on the first page. Strangely though the 8th link is to my username on Twitter’s API?

On page 2 I found site that I made a comment on a site regarding Lost: http://www.gilka.co.uk/2009/04/18/the-day-i-stopped-watching-lost-losts05e13/

The last results was the mobile Twitter version of my Twitter page.

Then top link on 3rd page! I need to work onthis

  2. Searching on “david r storms”

2nd link on first page, that is good, I seem to have established a bit of brand. Beat only by David R. Storm book  in the Amazon Winery Utilities section.

  3. Searching on “lost reviews”

I thought what were the chances, but since a lot fo pages on this site are Lost recaps for the last 2 seasons, I thought maybe. Not a chance! However if I did “david storms lost reviews” I was the first link, that I am happy about.

How is your ego surfing going? Comment on your results. I’ll update if I climb any further up the Google juice ladder!

  • Thanks Rob for your comment.

    UPDATE:

    1. On Google "david storms" gets my site as the 3rd link! That's incredible. I've been trying to promote my site more and I am excited that I've crawled onto the first page.

    2. Further on that, "david r storms" gets me the top link, which I would expect considering my first name.

    3. Tried this one, yet again not a chance. I haven't done one in months either, and there are a ton of sites out there.

I decided to give Bing and Yahoo a try (hopefully before Bing is the provider for Yahoo!):

Bing on "david storms" gets me the 3rd page. Oddly, there is a lot of "David Storm" (without the "S") out there that were first.

Bing on "david r storms" nets me the first link. Awesome, that's the brand I've been trying to build.

Yahoo on "david storms" gets me the 2nd link.

Yahoo on "david r storms" keep me at the 2nd link. Weird, to a Doctor David R from Storm lake???

My name “Rob Abdul” for the last 3 years has been my brand name.

Google has 3,360,000 results for my name Rob Abdul.

I was so proud when my name appeared in Google suggest.

I'm Number 1 for my name on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, AOL and many more!

It may not sound like much but at least 60 to 80 people Google me a month.

It is nice for the Ego, I must admit!
  • Hi David,
Googling yourself is an interesting phenomena indeed...
In a funny way, I find it similar to "Mirror, mirror on the wall"
Regarding Google profiles, I think that there some issues which need to be addressed. One person can have multiple identities online. It seems that Google profiles encourage people to add their Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook,Youtube or any other accounts.
Yahoo OneConnect uses the same logic, it assume that one person= all the services used by this person. You obviously don't want some of the people in your LinkedIn account to add you as a friend in Facebook or follow you on Twitter. I think that it is very useful to be able to read feeds from the services which you use like what Friendfeed does but at the same time not exposing your identity on your general profile page.
I wonder how will google rank profiles with the same name? Is it also going to be based on how many linked exist for this profile?
