I’ve always had a soft spot for Lego products. Back in the day I actually played with them, now I just enjoy putting the sets together. I focus mainly on the bigger sets that take a while to put together. In fact, a friend of mine and I are working on collecting the Lego City sets to build a while town! Crazy? Yes, immature? Maybe. Anyhow, lucky for me my friend gave me the Batcave set for being the best man in his wedding (a very hilarious gift to open at the rehearsal dinner!) and I eagerly awaited putting it together.
If you like Lego and Batman, this is a great set. I had a ton of fun putting this together. It comes with some very cool vehicles and characters and ends up being 1075 pieces. I spread putting it together over a couple of days and I have taken some photos. I apologize if they are not the best quality, hopefully I’ll figure out this camera and lighting thing for the next set.
Characters
 |
First up is Mr. Freeze. His freeze gun is one of the old video camera pieces with the white tubing the connects up to a back pack piece that has 2 small clear cylinders which are freeze tanks. Good work with the face and I love the helmet globe. |
 |
Next is the Penguin. He comes complete with an umbrella and top hat. What was new for me here is that the legs were actually about half the height of normal Lego person legs making the character much more diminutive.
Accompanying the villain is 3 gun toting penguin soldiers! These were cool! I love the little 6 shooters they carry. |
 |
Rounding out the bad guys is the common thug characters. Could be a Mr. Freeze henchman but no matter. He comes packing with a mini machine gun. |
 |
For our heroes we start with one of Batman’s most trusted partner, Alfred. Done up in his suite his almost smug look makes him look real tough and ready to kick butt.
The set comes with a block of ice with Mr. Freeze which unfortunately he is the target of! |
 |
All business, the Bruce Wayne character is in a blue suit and a serious look. I have him running toward the change room, because you know he just isn’t comfortable unless he’s in rubber tights! |
 |
Next up is the boy wonder Robin. The face and the slick hair do say it all for this character. |
 |
Finally we get the Dark Knight himself, Batman. I would put this depiction circa 1989 Batman film. |
 |
As a bonus, I’m including Two-Face from the Batmobile set. Not as gross looking as the new feature film but just as cool with the split outfit and crazy white hair.
His set comes with an Gotham City bank armoured car. A henchman driver is in the cab. The seat he sits on ejects him through a lever on the back of the truck when hit by a projectile. Guns angle down on either side. |
The Batcave

The central piece to the set is Batman’s computer area. There is a cool winding stair case leading up
to the main deck. Small bridges connect the other 2 pieces. At the centre is a big computer screen
showing Two-Face on the left and the Joker on the right. In the middle is some info about each of
the villains. Two swivel bat chairs are next to the bat symbol table. You’ll notice a drink tray and even
the bat phone! Yes the red light is for the phone. Computer consoles are under both of the screens
and in the middle you’ll find a magnifying glass looking at a tablet of finger prints, a blue jewel, and
a dragon statue. Off to the right is a sword mounted for display, and on the left in a plastic case is
a Joker Bomb! This is very cool, it’s a see-through green plastic head with a crazy Joker’s face on it.
I believe they come with the Joker set as well.

Here you can see the centre screen better.

I had to brighten it up, but you can see the magnifying glass
actually works and you can make out the finger prints on the
tablet below.

 |
To the right is the capsule that contains Bruce Wayne’s Batman outfit. It also seems to be a gym
as that looks to be a weight bar to me?This side also has a trap door on a pull lever at the back that will drop enemies into
the cell below. |
 |
Here is a shot of the cell below:

On the left side is another deck that looks like a dock, but is really a siege tower with a projectile and net
launching weapon:

The red light is the trigger to shoot the rubber front projectile. A crank at the back will tilt the platform
up and down while the whole base will rotate. There is a net inside the drum that launches out intending
to capture bad guys. If you fold it in there correctly, the plunger system just pops it out as fast you you
push the plunger to unsuspecting dudes below.

Wouldn’t be a cave if it didn’t have at least 1 rat! And that is what this set
has, one rat.
Vehicles

The Penguin attacks with a submarine u-boat where he can sit on
top. The sides also pull out so that you could put him inside. There
are moving flippers on the sides and back and of course the
periscope!

Robin counter attacks with his branded “R” boat with a mounted
gun. Seen here speeding away from gun toting bad guy!

Perhaps my favourite is the bat boat. More of mean looking speed ship than anything. It sits on skis and
has two large arching arms with 8 guns on each arm. Like the batmobile it has the fins off the back and
easily accommodates the caped crusader. See here on the parking platform. The platform has a ramp
leading up to it. The entire platform rotates so when the vehicle enters one way, you can rotate it to
point in the right direction. Off the platform is a little shelf of tools:
Final shot seen here with the batmobile (sorry it is dusty!):

Conclusion
I think the creators of this set had a lot of fun and were obvious Batman fans. I think the attention to detail
is apparent. A very fun set to put together and I highly recommend it.
