“The Incident”

800px-5x16_inverted_lostWe continue our recap/review of the season 5 finale with a look at the events that took place back in 1977 as events culminate into the incident mentioned way back in Season 2. Things go fast so enjoy!

Dismantling Jughead

Sayid, Jack along with Eloise and Richard are pulling apart Jughead deep in the under ground temple that is under the Dharma compound. Sayid was reading the detailed instructions left by Daniel in his journal on removing the key components to the bomb. Turns out all that they needed was the basic core of the bomb that Sayid could rig to detonate by ultimatey dropping it down the hole the Dharma group is drilling.

Richard helps them break through a wall that will lead them up into the Dharma compound (it’s actually Horace and Amy’s house, and I wonder if maybe Ben’s?). When he sees that Eloise is planning on going he quickly knocks her unconscious. He explains that she is pregnant and that he needs to protect their leader, even if she will be mad about it later. Jack and Sayid part ways with Richard and head up into the house.

Outside they see Dharma security everywhere with guns looking for the escapees. Sayid spies a jumpsuit of Horace’s and throws it on. They venture out into the compound and quickly try to cross it to get to the Swan station. Unfortunately Roger Linus (Ben’s Dad) spots Sayid and recognizes him and yells at him to halt. Sayid doesn’t want him to shoot considering he has a nuclear weapon on his back but Rogers does anyway. Sayid is hit in the gut. Jack fires back and the other Dharma security groups begin firing back.

Just when they are pinned down, Hurley again arrives in  Dharma van with Miles and ushers Sayid and Jack inside and they drive off into the woods.

Jack Must be Stopped

Saywer, Juliet and Kate are aboard the sub and Kate is trying to convince them that they have to stop Jack because he plans on blowing up the island. Sawyer doesn’t care and is quite happy with going back to the main land, even though it’s the seventies. Kate tries to plead with him and it actually ends up changing Juliet’s mind.

Since Sawyer will follow Juliet they release themselves and make their way to the bridge after subduing a guard and taking his gun. He orders the captain to act as if everything is normal and surface the sub to let them out. He complies and Sawyer shoots his radio so that he can’t warn anyone back at the island.

They take their raft and land on the beach to discover Vincent the dog there! Sawyer hugs the dog happy to see him after 3 years, and out from the jungle Rose appears disappointed that they were found. She takes them to a very bearded Bernard and they explain that they have been quite happy since the flaming arrow night 3 years ago and have made their peace and are retired. They want nothing to do with Jack or anything they are doing, they just want to be together and left alone.

I think Juliet can’t help but notice their contrast to everyone else that are so involved in everything and then Rose and Bernard who keep very peacefully apart and by themselves. She almost seems tempted to stay with them but ends up going with Kate and Sawyer anyway.

They end up catching up the Dharma van Hurley and crew are driving and force them to stop. Sawyer tells Jack that they need to talk and asks him to give him 5 minutes.

They move off into the jungle where Sawyer basically tells him he is crazy. He tells him that he could have done something about his parents murder since it had really just happened, but he is content with “what is done, is done” and thinks nothing can be changed or shouldn’t be changed. Jack is very stubborn on this believes this is his destiny and he is going through with it. When Sawyer can’t use words anymore he picks a fight and begins to pummel Jack.

It’s Juliet that stops him and Jack takes the chance to leave to continue his mission. Juliet tells Sawyer that she thinks they should help Jack erase the past. When Sawyer points out that they wouldn’t know each other she tells him that they were not meant to be together and she knew that when Kate came back. A very shattered Sawyer seems like he has nothing left to lose and gives up.

The Incident

Jack makes it with the bomb to the Swan site. He left Sayid who has lost a lot of blood in the care of Hurley and Miles. Radzinsky is at the site and had Phil arrive with more security. Dr. Change is also there monitoring the drill as it gets closer to the pocket of electromagnetic energy.

Kate also arrives and Jack breaks his promise and asks her why she came back to the island, what she did with Aaron. He tells her that Claire can have Aaron back, that by erasing the past and letting the plane land something different could happen. She agrees and plans on helping them.

Jack sneaks closer to the site but is spotted and a gun fight begins. He is outnumbered until the Dharma van appears. Juliet, Sawyer and Miles get into the firefight.

They manage to get the upper hand and even Sawyer tells Jack to drop the bomb. Jack drops the bomb down the very long hole. When it should have went off they know something went wrong. The drill had hit the pocket and the energy begins to be released. The ground starts shaking and everything metals starts to fly toward the hole.

Jack is knocked out by a toolbox, Dr. Chang’s arm is pinched by a crane fallen and is saved by Miles. Phil is amazingly skewered by a piece of rebar.

Tragically, a piece of chain wraps around Juliet and pulls her down the hole. Sawyer grabs a hold of her and Kate tries to help. He tries so desparately to save her but the magnetic force is too strong and she is sucked down into the hole. Sawyer is devastated by this and it takes everything Kate has to pull him away. Jack recovers and they flee the site as even the drilling crane gets pulled down.

We see then down the hole that Juliet somehow survived. She is very bloody and pinned under some metal. She sees the bomb sitting on some mud and finds a rock and manages to reach it. She hammers on the bomb over and over, and on the eighth time, the bomb seems to go off and the screen goes white, ending season.

What We Learned

  • Sayid may have been fatally shot
  • Juliet seems to break up with Sawyer throwing away everything they have for uncompelling reasons
  • the Incident happens when the pocket of energy is hit and pulls everything down into the drill hole
  • Phil is killed
  • Dr. Chang’s arm is injured which likely leads to the missing arm noticed in some of the Dharma videos
  • Juliet is pulled down into the drill hole and thought dead
  • Juliet smashes the bomb causing a while light possibly the bomb going off

That’s it! This is the first episode where we have a fade to white ending.  We are assuming that this is the bomb going off and perhaps it will transport the Losties back to 2007. Before he died Jacob did say “they’re coming,” did he mean the seventies Losties?

I think Juliet has left the show, this was the major character death we heard about. Although it is amazing that she survived that fall.

It’s been said that this finale and the premiere to next season should be the building blocks we need to piece together how the show is going to end. I for one can’t wait for the sixth and final season. I assume that will be next February, such a long wait!

Thanks for reading and more Lost next year!

LOST: season 5 finale part 1

“The Incident”

jacobandadversaryThis is the last finale before the series finale and the wrap to an amazing and my personal favourite season. In 2 storylines that I will cover in 2 parts we will explore what we learned and what is in store for the next season. Oddly Desmond was not a factor in this episode, we know that his story with the island is not over, and I’m sure once he recovers in the hospital he will inevitably be drawn back to the island.

The Coming of Jacob

Finally, the man we have heard of since season 2 has made his apperance! In fact the first few scenes of the finale show Jacob during his normal routine. He is weaving a tapestry on loom (which is Homer’s Odyssey) and catches and cooks fish on the beach at the base of the towering and complete statue.  Everyone is now convinced it is Tawaret, the Egyptian goddess of birth and fertility. Jacob has his chamber under neath the statue.

While on the beach we see off in the distance a ship which is the Black Rock before it’s visit to the island (how it gets washed inland is still unknown). Jacob, wearing a white shirt, is approached by a man in a black shirt. This man means to kill Jacob but is unable to. They are obviously enemies but some rules are in place preventing them from harming each other. The unamed man claims he will find a loophole to kill Jacob, to which Jacob tells him he will be right here waiting.

Jacob Visits the Castaways

In a series of flash backs, we discover that Jacob has been off island many times and has reached out to our survivors. Back in the seventies Kate and her friend Tom were caught stealing a New Kids on the Block lunch box and it was Jacob that paid the shop keeper for the box preventing the cops from being called. He expressed to Kate that she should never steal again and lightly taps her on the nose.

During the funeral for Sawyers parents (he is still James Ford at this point – and his father killed his mother before killing himself, thanks to Locke’s dad!) young Sawyer is writing the letter that he will eventually deliver to Mr. Sawyer, the man he holds responsible for his parents death. When his pen dries up its a concerned Jacob that approaches and gives him a pen and he slighly touches him on the hand when he does so.

Jacob appears later to Jack after he finishes a surgery in which his father embarasses him in front of Jack’s staff. Jack while trying to get a candy bar out of the vending machine is frustrated when it gets stuck. After chastising his father for his behaviour Jacob offers Jack the candy bar from the vending machine, again grazing his hand when he did so saying the candy bar just needed a little push.

Jacob, while sitting outside reading a book, stands up when a body lands behind him. The body is John Locke after his father pushed him out of the 8 story building. Jacob touches his shoulder and this seems to awaken or bring Locke back to life. Locke looks at him and Jacob says that he is sorry that this had to happen to him.

Before Sayid became an assassin, he was happy with Nadia. They were crossing a street when Jacob stopped Sayid (touching him on the shoulder) and asking for directions. Nadia however continued on the street and was struck down by a car that sped away. Before she died she told Sayid to take her home.

Jacob is also a guest at the wedding of Sun and Jin. He tells them in flawless Korean that their love is special and should never be taken for granted. Jacob touches them both on the shoulder before departing. Neither Sun nor Jin recognize the man.

Finally we have Hurley who was just released from prison having been acquited from the murders he did not commit (from earlier this season).  The guard hands him back his perosnal effects: some cash, a pen and some candy. Those are the 3 things Jacob offers to Kate, Sawyer and Jack oddly enough. Hurley shares a cab with Jacob who ends up telling Hurley that he is not cursed but blessed and that he needs to get on Ajira Flight 316. He touches Hurley and tells him that the choice is up to him. Jacob leaves the cab and Hurley stops him telling him he forgot his guitar case, to which Jacob says that it is not his.

In a brief flashback Jacob visits Illana in Russia. Her face is bandaged and she seems to know Jacob. He apologizes for not visiting sooner and asks for her help. He does not ask what but she agrees.

The Plight to Jacob

We pick up with the new crash survivors of which Illana is the leader. They row to the main island and still have Frank Lapidus with them. Bram asks her if Frank could be a candidate to which she does not know. Frank wakes up and asks what he could be a candidate for and they do not answer. They begin their trek toward Jacob’s cabin.

When they find it (easier than others mind you) they discover that the line of ash is broken around the cabin. Illana goes in alone and finds the place a wreck. On the wall she finds some cloth stuck with a blade to the wall, it depicts the four toed statue. She comes back out and tells Bram that someone else has been using the cabin and that they should burn it to the ground. She shows him the cloth and they know where they must go.

The Others are still marching to the statue lead by Richard. They rest at the former Losties camp. While there Sun finds Claire’s tent and the baby carriage Aaron used. Inside she finds Charlie’s Drive Shaft ring.

Locke talks with Ben and has told him that he expects him to kill Jacob. Ben confesses that his dead daughter in the temple was the one to tell him to follow every word of John Locke or else she will destroy him. Locke poisons Ben’s mind telling him that he has been treated so poorly by Jacob and has every reason to kill him.

Richard leads them to the base of the four toed statue and tells Locke that this where Jacob lives. Richard pushes aside a wall to let Locke inside. When Richard sees that Ben is accompanying Locke he exclaims that only the leader is allowed to visit Jacob to which Locke ignores. He heads inside anyway.

While Locke is inside Illana and her group arrive with their crate. She asks to speak to Richardus to which Richard steps forward. She asks him what lies in the shadow of the statue? to which he answers in Latin.

She tells him he has something to show her and dumps the contents of the coffin. Inside is the body of John Locke.

Inside the temple Locke hands Ben a knife and they enter the main chamber. They find Jacob inside waiting for them. Jacob knows that the man that is Locke is really his adversary sees that he has found his loop hole.

Ben approaches Jacob upset and tells him that he should not have been treated so insignificantly, that he always did what he was told and never seemed to get any recognition from Jacob, never actually got to meet him. He asks “what about me?” to which Jacob replies “what about you?”

Ben then stabs Jacob. As Jacob is on his knees he tells his adversary that “they’re coming” and then he is kicked into the fire to burn by his adversary.

What We Learned

  • Jacob visited Kate and touched her when she was young
  • Jacob visited a young Sawyer and touched him when he was at his parents funeral
  • Jacob visisted a pre-Ocenaic 815 Locke after he fell 8 stories and seemed to bring him back to life by his touch

  • Jacob visited a pre-Oceanic 815 Sun and Jin and touched them when congratulating them at their wedding
  • Jacob visited a post-Oceanic 815 Sayid and touched him and saved him from being run down, but Nadia was killed
  • Jacob visited a post-Oceanic 815 Hurley after he left prison and touched him as well, telling him of Ajira Fligh 316 and leaving him the guitar case
  • Jacob has an adversary and this unamed man wants to kill him and is looking for a loop hole in the rules to do it
  • We know the four toed statue is Tawaret, Egyption goddess of birth
  • It was Jacob that brought the Black Rock to the island
  • Frank Lapidus is considered a possible candidate for something by Illana and Bram’s group
  • Illana’s group find Jacob’s cabin and burn it to the ground, saying that someone else has been using it
  • Richard leads Locke and the Others to the statue to meet Jacob
  • Locke and Ben go inside the statue chamber where Ben stabs and kills Jacob
  • Jacob reveals that Locke is his adversary and that he found the loop hole, and before he dies says “they’re coming”
  • Illana’s group arrive and ask Richard the question to which he correctly answers
  • Illana shows Richard what is in the crate, it is the corpse of John Locke

Part Two

In part 2 we will recap the events that lead up to the incident in 1977.

LOST: season 5 episode 15

May 9th, 2009 View Comments

locke“Follow the Leader”

Here we have the final episode before the finale, and we finally get to catch up on some characters we haven’t seen in a while. There is no real centric character to this episode but I like to lean toward Jack and Locke.

Jack’s Destiny

Jack and Kate watch from the jungle as Daniel gets shot. Jack wants to help but Kate warns him that the same would happen to him. Before they can get away they are surrounded and Jack is bloodied by one of the Others. It’s younger Widmore that has him at gunpoint.

Widmore takes them into their camp where Eloise is looking at her dead son and the book he left behind. Jack tells her that they were with him. She has them put into her tent where she speaks to them in private. This is where Jack confesses that they are from the future and that they came for the bomb that was buried. His plan is to blow up the bomb so that they can erase everything that had happened and prevent a lot of misery, including Eloise killing her son. To this she agrees even against Widmore’s wishes. Eloise asks Richard and another to come with her, Jack and Kate to get the bomb.

They go to the temple but Kate doesn’t want anything to do with Jack’s plan. She thinks he is crazy and sounds a lot like Locke, but Jack won’t budge. She decides to go back to the barracks to find Sawyer but she is threatended that she knows too much and can’t leave. Suddenly Sayid appears and shoots one of the others saving Kate.

Jack explains to Sayid what they want to do and even tells Sayid that they saved Ben and that he didn’t really kill him. This seems to solidfy Sayid a bit and he plans to go with Jack.

Richard, Eloise, Jack then Sayid swim underwater to gain access to the Temple. Inside the ancient building is covered with heiroglyphs and they soon find the bomb Jughead, which happens to be right under the Dharma compound.

Not More Playing House

Hurley manages to take some food from the compound and meets Jin and Miles in the jungle. Dr. Chang finds them and asks them again if they really are from the future. Hurley is unable to keep up the lie and so Miles tells him that he is really his son. Chang says that Farraday wanted him to evacuate the island for their safety, and he seems convinced he has to do this.

Sawyer and Juliet are being held captive and being question by Stu Radzinsky about what they know and where their friends are. Chang appears and tells them he has ordered the evacuation of the camp of non-essential personnel since it is too dangerous here. Sawyer is very tight lipped and will say nothing and that just makes Radzinsky beat him more. Horace is there and tries to calm him down but Radzinsky basically ignores him saying he doesn’t have the guts to do what needs to be done.

An angy Phil knows how to get Sawyer to talk and hits Juliet. Sawyer breaks and says he’ll cooperate to which Radzinsky gives him a book and tells him to draw a map to where the hostiles camp is. Sawyer stikes a deal that if he does then they will be put on the sub to leave the island.

Radzinsky agress to this and so Sawyer begins to draw.

Later Miles, Hurley and Jin watch as the sub is being boarded. We see young Charlotte and her mother leaving, and Miles sees his mother and his infant self being told to leave by Chang. He understands know why his mother had such bad feelings for him. They also sees Juliet and Sawyer being escorted into the sub and they look on confused, thinking this must be his plan.

Sawyer and Juliet are hand cuffed into the sub. Sawyer reveals that the Dharma group are not the police and that they will be free in the “real world.” Before the sub leaves, Phil brings down Kate who was captured and hand cuffs her with Sawyer and Juliet. The sub then leaves the island.

Locke Finally Has a Purpose

Locke finds the Others camp with Ben and Sun and brings a boar to Richard for dinner who is very surprised to see him after three years. Richard notices that he is different and Locke tells him he has a purpose now. Ben tells Sun that Richard is like an advisor and that he has been around for a very long time. She races to him and asks if he was here in 1977 and shows him the Dharma recruit pictures and wants to know if he seen Jin. Richard said he was here thirty years ago and watched them all die.

Locke later tells Sun that if there is anyway he can save Jin, he will. But first he takes Ben and Richard into the jungle to run an errand. They arrive at the downed plane where Locke gives Richard a first aid kit and tells him that a man with a gun shot wound will be coming toward the plane and that he needs to patch him up. He says that he also has to tell him that he has to convince the ones who left to come back to the island and that he will have to die to do it.

Locke is of course talking about the earlier scene in the season where Richard tended to him and told him what he had to do.

Locke returns to the beach and gathers all of the Others, his people. He tells him that for too long they have been taking orders from a man named Jacob that they have never seen before. Locke tells them that they are going to finally go and find Jacob.

On the way Ben and Richard seem very perplexed and worried about what Locke is doing and that he is acting very dangerous. Later Locke tells Ben that he doesn’t really care about helping Sun so much, but that he real purpose is to find Jacob so that he can kill him.

What We Learned

  • Daniel is confirmed dead
  • Eloise is helping Jack use the h-bomb which is buried in the Temple under the Dharma compound
  • Sayid joins Jack, Eloise and Richard in the temple
  • Sawyer makes a deal with Radzinsky to get himself and Juliet off the island on the sub if he shows them where the hostiles camp is
  • Kate is also taken and is sent off the island with Sawyer and Juliet
  • Chang is convinced that Daniel was right and orders the evacuation of the island, he also believes there will be an accident at the Swan site
  • Locke from 2007 was the one who had Richard help his previous self after being shot and put the idea in his head to get everyone who left back to the island and that he had to die. He says the island told him to do this.
  • Locke is taking the Others to see Jacob
  • Locke reveals his plan is to find and kill Jacob

LOST: season 5 episode 14

“The Variable”

danThis is the 100th “hour” of lost television. I haven’t done the math, so I don’t know if that means 100 episodes and they are not counting 2 parters or not. Either way, this is almost the companion episode to last seasons “The Constant” and features the return of Daniel Farraday to the island back in 1977.

Daniel and Ms. Hawking

As we knew previously, she is Daniel’s mother. We see a flash back of him playing the piano as a child and a young Ms. Hawking a little upset tell him that he does not have time for music, that science is the important work he needs to do now. Despite the fact that young Daniel says that he can make time, his mother tells him that it is her job to steer him in the right direction.

I am curious of the year of this conversation is 1977, and a older Daniel Farraday who left the island happened to visit his mother and tell her something and lead her to a certain conclusion.

Skipping ahead we see Daniel are Theresa after Daniel just finished become the youngest doctor to graduate out of Oxford. Hawking doesn’t really approve of the girlfriend and while having lunch alone with Daniel she tells him he has too much work and has no time for women. Daniel says that Charles Widmore is giving him a research grant, to which Hawking pauses but seems to approve. She again tells him about his path and gives him his present, the leather book that we see him carry with him.

Later we meet Daniel from season 4 where he was crying over the news that Oceanic 815 was found. Charles Widmore visits him and tries to convince Daniel to go the island, that it will heal his broken mind. He says that the people are not dead, that he put the wreckage there as af ake. Daniel had used the machine on himself that he created at Oxford and on Theresa himself. His mind is fractured and he is unable to remember things.

Daniel only agrees after his mother visists him and insists that he goes, that it will heal him so that he can continue his work.  Daniel agrees to go if it will heal him and more imortantly make his mother proud of him.

Finally we see the aftermath of Desmond being shot. While he didn’t die, he was actually shot and Penny took him to the hospital. Ms. Hawking visists her and explains she is Daniel’s mother and that she is sorry about Desmond. She acts as if he is dead but for the first time in her life she has no clue what is going to happen.

Hawking sees Widmore outside but he won’t go in, that he and his daughter dont’ speak, he does ask if Desmond is alright. He begins to talk about Penny as his sacrifice when Hawking slaps him saying that she is the one who had to sacrifice her son. Widmore also reveals that Daniel is his son too.

Daniel’s Destiny

Farraday arrives on the island after receiving news in Ann Arbour about new recruits to the island. He has a paper with the photograph of Kate, Jack and Hurley. He goes to meet Jack and ask him how he got back to the island. Jack could only say that his mother (Ms. Hawking) told him it was his destiny to which Daniel said no, they were not supposed to be there.

Daniel has miles drive him to the Orchid station where they wait for Dr. Chang. When he arrives Daniel tries to talk to him. We see the scene from the first episode this season with Daniel bumping into Chang. He rushes to talk with him urgently that he has to evacuate the island, that in a few hours there will be an accident at the Swan site that will be a distaster.

Farraday also tells him he knows this because he is from the future. He tries to use Miles to convince him telling Chang right in front of Miles that Miles is his son from the future. Miles denies this and Chang leaves telling Farraday to never talk to him again.

Things start to get out of control at this point. Jack, Kate, Hurley, Jin, Juliet and Sawyer are meeting trying to figure out what to do about Phil being tied up and their ruse in Dharma in danger of being exposed when Miles and Farraday show up.

He tells them they have to find his mother, who is with the hostiles. She is the only one that can help them. Jack is all for this but Sawyer doesn’t want them to, he opts to head for the beach so that they can start over. When Sawyer asks Kate if she is with them, Juliet offers up the code to the sonic fence so that Kate would agree to go with Jack and Farraday.

The rest begin to pack up their things for the beach when Jack and Kate with Farraday head to the motopool to get guns. Farraday sees young Charlotte again, and fulfilling his future, warns her that she has to leave the island because what if he succeeds they would all die. While there Radzinsky and a couple armed men appear asking why Daniel wasn’t at the Swan site, when he sees they have guns a shootout begins in which Daniel is slightly hurt. They manage to escape into the jungle on a jeep after exploding a fuel tank to cover their escape.

Radzinsky visits LaFluer telling him they have spies among them, when he hears something and finds Phil tied up in the cloest he puts the gun on Sawyer and Juliet.

After passing the sonic fence, they continue on foot. While resting Daniel explains what he plans to do. He tells them that an accident at the Swan site forces Dharma to contruct a way to regulate the energy they unleashed which would be the hatch and having to push a button. He said that Desmond ends up down there, and that leads to him not pushing the button and the Oceanic plane crashing and the freighter coming to the island. He plans on changing of all this by finding Jughead, the hydrogen bomb from earlier in the season and detonating it.

When Jack wonders why whaterver happened has happened no longer makes sense, Daniel said he forgot that they were variables, that this is their present and they can change things. He points out that Daniel didn’t have a scar when they met him from when he was just recently injured in the gun fight.

When they find the hostiles camp, Jack and Kate wait in the jungle while Farraday goes down into the camp. He has a gun and uses it to keep the hostiles at bay. Richard Alpert is there and may recognize him. Farraday asks where they buried the bomb and where Eloise Hawking is. While Richard is trying to calm him down Daniel is shot. When he collapses he sees that it was his mother that had shot him. Before he dies, he tells her that she knew what was going to happen, and he tells her that he is her son.

What We Learned

  • Ms Hawking, Daniel’s mother, has been grooming him toward science his entire life
  • She was very protective and disapproved of any other then his career, including women
  • She gave him the leather journal
  • Widmore visisted Daniel trying to convince him to go the island on the freighter
  • Daniel’s mind is fractured from his Oxford experiment and his memories are scattered, which may explain him being upset at seeing the Oceanic 815 crash
  • Sawyer decides that they should go to the beach, Jin, Hurley, Juliet and Miles are with them.
  • Radzinsky finds Phil tied up, exposing Sawyer and Juliet
  • Daniel was at Ann Arbor on the Swan team in 1977 and came back to the island because he saw Jack, Kate and Hurley were there
  • Daniel wants to change the future, saying that they are the variables
  • He plans to do this by detonating the hydrogen bomb which will stop the incident from happening, thus the hatch being built and the need to push the button every 108 minutes
  • A young Ms Hawking fatally shoots Daniel when he tries to find her and the bomb
  • He tells a young Hawking that she knew in the future she was sending him to his death, and the he is her son
